NXT's technologies are unique and based on harnessing the natural modes of vibration in a panel to reproduce sound.  These technologies are derived from a profound understanding of bending wave physics and its applications to sound generation. 

NXT's vast intellectual property portfolio covers the fundamental principles together with numerous techniques for enhancement and optimisation as applied to various applications.

NXT's fundamental technologies are the Distributed Mode Loudspeaker (DML) and the Audio Full Range loudspeaker (AFR).  Common to both technologies is the ability to control and deal with the natural modes of a panel speaker system. DML provides techniques to turn almost any shape/size panel into a loudspeaker, whilst AFR confers specific solutions for circular panels.

In both cases, the loudspeakers exhibit some common features such as a broad frequency range, wide directivity and shallow form-factor. A direct benefit of such powerful features is to take complexity out of audio systems in today’s ever-increasing need for flatter/narrower/smaller loudspeakers.

Quite separately, and as a result of our core knowledge, NXT invented a unique touch screen technology using bending waves.  This technology has been exclusively licensed to 3M and is known commercially as Dispersive Signal Technology (DST).

NXT Patents

From the very beginning, NXT has filed numerous patent applications to protect its fast-expanding technology base in a wide range of countries.

A careful strategy was adopted where according to the nature of the inventions and their commercial impact, a preferred set of countries were chosen to take the patents to grant.  This approach takes account of the relative prominence of each country as a manufacturing base and/or market size.

Since NXT was founded, the fast flow of inventions demanded patent applications to be filed at frequent intervals.  Because intellectual property has been a core asset of NXT, this effort has demanded a large investment of capital over the years.  Careful and ongoing analysis and assessment of NXT’s patent portfolio in light of potential commercial return is used to determine which inventions are the most important ones to pursue for best return on investment.

With technologies perfectly suited to the transport arena, NXT offers DirectDrive solutions, which allow (portions of) the interior trim of passenger vehicles, buses and even aircraft to be transformed in overwhelming loudspeaker solutions.  These zero footprint solutions are already implemented in Boeing 737 business jets where they act as in-flight entertainment centres, completely blending in with the aircraft’s interior while delivering unrivalled audio performance.

In displays, both SurfaceSound and SoundVu solutions are used because of their looks and performance. Leading players in the display sector including Philips and NEC have launched highly successful, award winning products using NXT’s technologies.
