Extending the pole past the top of the Frontplate can yield two improvements in performance for any speaker. The first is to produce symmetry in the flux field outside of the gap. This flux, often called the Fringe Field, is responsible for a significant portion of the BL product. In a typical speaker, where the pole is flush with the front plate, the Fringe Field is slightly uneven with a greater level of flux below the Frontplate compared to the amount above. Extending the pole past the top of the Frontplate evens this out with the optimum symmetry at the point where the extension is equal to ?of the Frontplate Thickness.

The second improvement is to the thermal power handling of the speaker. This is achieved by increasing the amount of heatsink area next to the voice coil.  Ideally the pole is extended to provide heat-sinking over the entire length of the coil. The disadvantage to doing this is that a portion of the flux is lost by extending the pole past the optimum point.
